Aireal
an AR tool that allows users to walk through virtual spaces, customizing different features

Aireal was a repeat client, requesting new features and locations. Each location had its own unique challenges, and the final request was the development of a reusable editor that would allow their clients to create their own locations with customization options.

The Magnolia home

The founder of Arieal came to us with the request to develop a new experience based on an episode of Magnolia's Fixer Upper: Welcome Home. This request came with the unique challenge of not having any technical documents to aid or art team. We only had the episode that aired, and the blog that accompanied it on the Magnolia website.

My Solutions

I started with analyzing the walkthrough footage at the end of the episode, as well as the blog on Magnolia Home’s Website, which featured extra details not available within the episode.

I created a hierarchy of detail, organizing which details were most important and impactful. Our limited time frame meant that we couldn’t recreate everything perfectly. The detail hierarchy allowed us to decide which details to spend the most time on. At the top were specific fixtures, appliances, furniture etc. At the bottom were clutter objects, like books and trinkets. The most important objects had more time dedicated to accurate asset creation, while things like books made quickly without concern for accuracy.

Throughout the various fixer upper episodes and seasons, Joanna always elected to use things that can be purchased from Magnolia's own catalogue. The blog includes a document that outlines which products were used throughout the house. This made it easy to find reference images for modeling furniture and fixtures.

Once we understood what assets needed to be made, we presented our findings to the client, expressing concerns about time constraints. I presented the option to closing off the bedroom and bathrooms. This would afford us the time to put more detail into the main areas of the house, which were crucial to recognizing the space.
